Thunder Road 2006

Highlights of the T-Road “Classics & Chrome” Cruise-In
By Fred Cook & Gene Napoliello

There were 42 cars that registered for our July 30th Meet at the picturesque Thunder Road race track in Barre Town. Weather was “chamber of commerce” type. In other words, perfect. Gene and Lucille Napoliello were gracious hosts along with Ray Tomlinson, who was in charge of registration.

The turnout featured muscle cars of the 60s and 70s and a few street rods plus some antique and classics like Gael Boardman’s 1918 Locomobile. The 11 AM to 3:00 PM timetable allowed car owners to mingle with one another, enjoy a picnic lunch and take a lap around the high banks of T-Road before departing. Some sat in on the VAE business meeting.

Gene announced that the Classics and Chrome Cruise-In had collected $947 for Camp Ta-Kum-Ta, thanks to the generosity of all that attended. Don and Robin Lahue, doubled their usual $100 contribution to $200, which would later be matched by the Northfield Savings Bank. That will bring the final amount to $1147, the highest total raised in the five year history of the event.
Gene introduced Ted Kessler of Camp Ta-Kum-Ta who spoke briefly. Ted is president of the non-profit organization that runs the Camp for Kids with Cancer, a position he’s held for a number of years. He’s headed a capital campaign that’s about ready to break ground for a new building with business offices, medical treatment facility and a cafeteria on the grounds of Camp Holy Cross in Colchester.

Over 70 kids from upstate New York and Vermont will attend the one week session in early August. A large pediatric oncology staff is composed entirely of volunteers. Many diversified activities are available for the kids including cliff-climbing, a full ropes course, arts and crafts, and swimming. This year’s theme is Musicals of Broadway. Artists from Broadway musicals themselves will be present to teach the kids on how to put on a show by themselves. Ted is a cancer survivor, himself.

At this point, a drawing for door prizes resulted in the following winners, each of whom choose an automotive product donated by Gene and Lucille Napoliello.

The grand prize winner was VAE member Romeo Pelletier of South Barre, proud owner of 1957 Chevy Bel Air 4-door sedan. His prize: a 1957 Chevy VHS auto winder car! Fitting, yes?

Other door prize winners were: Steve and Mary Baker, Louis Murray, Richard Luce, Arthur Drown, Luke Lacroix, Robert Guinn, Ronnie Conti, Gary Scott, Morris Lilly, John Lasell, Dough McIntosh, Reg Ferland, Claud and Nicky Lafleur, Charlie Smith and Jim Pinard.

Thanks for coming. See you in 2007!
